Fletcher's not so corny Corny Dog
Of course, no discussion of Texas food could go far without the mention of Fletcher's Original State Fair Corny Dog. Neil and Carl Fletcher first got a concession stand at the Texas State Fair in 1938. Some say that in their search for something unique to sell they made note of another Dallas vendor who cooked a hotdog coated in cornmeal and shaped like an ear of corn. However his process was cumbersome. They improved on the idea by putting the hot dog on a stick and using the stick to hold the dog while they dipped it into the batter. After frying, the stick made it easy to hold the dog and eat it.
The Fletchers introduced this new mouth watering treat in 1942.
